Internships in the UK

There are many companies in the UK that offer internship programmes from well known businesses to small NGOs. While many are likely to be unpaid, you'll find most offer perks like lunch and travel expenses or even free expeditions, obviously depending on what kind of company you intern with. There are some that do pay and even lead on to full time work as part of graduate schemes so, before you start applying, it's worth having a think what your future plans are and how you can use your internship to help you get there.

Internships are about learning and enhancing your skills to prepare you for the working world and with such a wide variety of positions available to you, make sure you shop around and choose a company that suits you and will give you what you want from your placement.

Internships Overseas

Overseas internships tend to have a more vocational focus and so are suitable for anyone studying specialist degrees, like medicine, veterinary medicine, journalism, law or sport science degrees. Many degrees like this often require you to complete a certain amount of work experience placements to demonstrate you can use what you learnt in your lectures in real life. By doing one of these internships, you are able to learn while volunteering and even gain credit for your university degree.

Medical internships do tend to dominate the market so if you are a medical student, this is definitely something worth looking into for your elective requirements, whether it's in a rural clinic or a bustling city hospital. Or, if journalism is your thing, you could help run a local newspaper or get involved with the local radio station. You could even train to be an international translator with a business internship. With so many to choose from, interning abroad is an excellent way to get trained and also add essential skills to your CV, such as initiative and awareness of other cultures, that you'll gain from living and working in a new country.

There are several companies that help you find internships abroad, though, like gap year companies, some will charge a fee and are likely to have an interview process. At the end of the day, with an internship you are applying for a job so the company want to make sure you are up to task.

If you are up for a challenge and throwing yourself in the deep end with a new job and new country, internships overseas are a great opportunity for you to observe the professionals in action while experiencing new cultures and ways of working and to get involved with the important work they do.
