Money Matters

The chances are, the first time you plan that globe-spanning dream route of yours, the resulting price will be more nightmarish than dreamy. The world map that is already littered with pins in your desired countries seems even more out of reach, but it needn't be that way.

How can I raise the money? This is the million dollar question, but the answer is actually pretty simple. When you want something enough, everything else pales in comparison to achieving your goal- namely the aforementioned globe-spanning dream route.

The most obvious way is to work, work every hour you can find. Even with a minimum wage job, if you're working full time, and are willing to sacrifice nights out and shopping addictions, you'll be surprised how quickly your balance will add up, even by saving just a little each week. Some people are obviously better savers than others, or rather are less tempted by spending; if you fall into the latter category, motivate yourself by setting targets like £300 by next month or work out what you could buy with that money when you are travelling.

Budgeting

You probably will spend more money than you thought while you're away and they do say budgets are made to be broken…but you have to make one first.

Budgets don't have to be anything too complicated, knowing how much money you have to play with is the best start. Once you know this, you can start to figure everything else in.

With all that planning you'll have done, you should have a good idea about the type of trip you want and the kinds of activities you want to try while you are away. Be realistic, you cannot rely on your overdraft or credit cards to cover you while you bungee jump and white-water raft your way around the world- they'll only be waiting for you when you get home.

Let's start with the essentials, those big costs that you cannot avoid:

Scrimping & Saving

The good news is there are some things you can scrimp and save on to give you more freedom with your money when it comes to activities and projects!

Remember: One place you should never scrimp on is insurance! Make sure you commit some time to thinking specifically about what insurance policy is going to best suit you and your trip.
