Planning your Gap Year
If you're new to the travelling scene or maybe you're just a little out of practice, you're bound to have 101 questions. Asking questions is one of the best ways to plan your gap year since it helps you find out what's on offer and work out what you really want to get out of your trip.
With so many thousands of websites and forums online and everyone talking about gap years- it's easy to get overwhelmed! But with a bit of planning and research, your gap year can be something that really will be hard to forget.
When shall I take my gap year?
- The traditional gap year takes place after you finish college and before university. You can defer your place on your UCAS form and then return to university refreshed and ready for work when you get back.
- You could make the most of the long summer break after college before university starts.
- One of the many perks of university is the long Easter and Summer holidays you'll get so take advantage!
- Put off joining the working world for a few more months and take your gap year after you graduate.
- Give yourself some time out from your job with a sabbatical and take a career break.
- Take a break in between jobs.
Why take a gap year?
- After being in education since you were 4 years old you'll probably deserve a break before starting higher education.
- Taking some time off gives you time to think seriously about what you want to do next, away from the stresses of exams, work, UCAS applications and personal statements.
- Travel experience and work experience abroad is great to put on your CV and can really boost your personal statement for UCAS or job applications.
- You could develop any existing skills you have by choosing a related volunteer project abroad; you could even spend a year working in your chosen industry, especially if you're training to be a doctor or vet.
- People who take a gap year are likely to be more prepared for independent living and meeting new people when they get to university.
- Simply and unashamedly to explore the world!
