Money
It's a sad fact that travellers are a prime target for robberies but by taking a few precautions you can avoid any major damage. Here are a few tricks of the trade to help you keep a tight hold on your cash while you're on the road.
Stolen Credit Cards
If your credit card gets lost or stolen, make sure you call your bank straight away- they will have a Lost and Stolen Cards Helpline and some have 24 hour international help for these types of situations. Email these phone numbers to yourself then you know they are somewhere safe and always accessible. They will be able to cancel your card or freeze your account while you turn the hostel upside-down double checking you haven't just hidden it somewhere! Always keep your credit card on you or if you don't need it, put it your hostel's safe deposit box if they have one- that's what it's there for.
Money Belts
Perhaps not the most fashion forward addition to your attire, but they are incredibly useful, particularly while you are on the road. It means you can keep your passports, credit cards, cash and anything else important on your person and so if the worst happens and your bag is stolen, you have saved yourself a lot of hassle.
Dummy Wallets
Carrying 'dummy wallets', an old wallet with a few small notes of cash and an expired bank card, is another way of handling your cash while you are travelling. If you unfortunately do get mugged, you can quickly hand over your 'dummy wallet', secure in the knowledge that your real credit card and money is safe.
Money Wiring
If you do find yourself without any money, whether you've been robbed or simply spent too much, there are ways people can send money to you from the UK that doesn't take time to clear. Companies like Western Union or Moneygram are the most popular and fastest with transfers promised to arrive with you in 10 minutes.
